Germany Establishes National Security Council

The German Federal Government has advanced plans for the establishment of a National Security Council. Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced Wednesday following a cabinet meeting at the Federal Ministry of Defence, that the move culminates three decades of discussion, with a decision reached and parliamentary process initiated within four months.

The council is envisioned as a central platform for the federal government to address comprehensive national security concerns, integrating internal, external, economic and digital security considerations. Merz emphasized that security isn’t the sole responsibility of any single ministry, but a matter of collective concern, adding that the council’s formation will facilitate proactive and strategic planning.

The Chancellor stated the Security Council will serve as a key component of an integrated “security policy” underlining a holistic approach to national safeguarding. Simultaneously, the cabinet also initiated legislation to strengthen the Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD). This development signals a concerted effort to enhance Germany’s security infrastructure and strategic foresight.
