The German federal government responded to the outcome of the Hungarian parliamentary election with visible relief. During a briefing with the dts news agency on Monday, government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius stated that the government viewed the election result not merely as information, but as a historic event. He noted that the Hungarian voters had cast their votes in unprecedented numbers. According to Kornelius, the results indicated that the people had not just rejected a government, but an entire system, effectively choosing freedom once again since 1989.
Kornelius further described the election outcome as “good news for all of Europe”. He explained that the federal government welcomes this development because it will make it easier for Germany’s European policies, goals, and ambitions to be pursued within the European Union. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that there is no irreversible trend toward authoritarianism in Hungary.
Looking ahead, the spokesperson stated that the government anticipates “a very constructive cooperation within the European Union” with the new winner, Péter Magyar’s party. He added that the Hungarian government can count on Germany’s support in this area, and that they are poised to advance their interests together rapidly.
Regarding the release of frozen EU funds for Hungary, the spokesperson remained more reserved. He noted that there are established procedures and conditions set by the European Commission for this money, processes that the government leaves to the Commission. Nonetheless, the administration affirmed that it naturally aims for the “greatest possible normalization” with the new Hungarian government.
