The German government hopes that the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Washington will generate “positive momentum.”
According to government spokesman Stefan Kornelius, it is naturally important that these two major powers coordinate issues ranging from trade policy to broader matters of war and peace. Kornelius confirmed to the dts Nachrichtenagentur on Wednesday that while Germany will be closely observing the summit, no specific expectations have been formulated. He added that Germany’s positions regarding both countries are already well defined.
Furthermore, an official from the Foreign Office highlighted a separate conversation between Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) and his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi. Wadephul stated that Germany maintains a “continuous and regular exchange” with the Chinese side on a wide range of international issues. He noted that the telephone call, held the day before yesterday, reaffirmed this ongoing dialogue.
