The German federal government says it keeps the option open for Chancellor Olaf Scholz to attend the FIFA World Cup in the United States. “We will announce the Chancellor’s itinerary on the Friday of the week before the tournament” deputy press secretary Sebastian Hille told the dts news agency on Monday. “If I recall correctly, it is still a short time until the World Cup”.
Regarding the fatal shootings of U.S. federal police officers in Minneapolis, Hille said the German government trusts the U.S. justice system to investigate the incident. He added that Germany has no independent findings on the matter and therefore will not comment further.
On the possibility of a general boycott of the World Cup, Hille made it clear that the decision about the national team’s participation in competitions lies with the team itself, not the German government.
The 23rd FIFA World Cup will run from 11 June to 19 July across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, with Germany scheduled to play all three of its group‑stage matches in U.S. cities.
