Germany Launches Digital Child Protection Expert Panel

A new expert commission focused on child and youth protection in the digital world is set to launch in Germany at the end of this month. The body, formally titled “Kinder- und Jugendschutz in der digitalen Welt” will convene for its inaugural meeting on September 30th, according to Co-Chair Nadine Schön, in an interview with the “Rheinische Post”. The initial session will focus on introductions and establishing working procedures, with the commission aiming for rapid progress thereafter.

The commission’s formation follows commitments outlined in the current coalition agreement and addresses growing concerns about risks faced by young people online. These risks encompass a wide range of issues, including sexual abuse, boundary violations, glorification of violence, undue influence and addictive behaviors.

The Federal Minister for Family Affairs is establishing the commission to collect specialized expertise from diverse fields and to collaboratively develop strategies and actionable recommendations. The overarching goal is to foster a healthy and supportive digital environment for children and adolescents, enhancing their protection, participation and empowerment. The initiative intends to move beyond broad statements and deliver concrete, practical solutions.

Alongside Nadine Schön, Olaf Köller, the acting scientific director of the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education in Kiel, will serve as Co-Chair of the commission.
