The Federal Ministry of Transport has issued the first funding call under a new guideline dedicated to supporting a “green inland shipping” sector. The ministry announced that the federal government has allocated up to 70 million euros for this initiative. The funding is specifically geared towards projects that enable the use of zero-emission or low-emission inland vessels and facilitate the creation of the necessary supporting infrastructure.
Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger (CDU) emphasized that inland shipping is a “highly effective and climate-friendly transport mode with great future potential.” He stated that this new funding will help accelerate the practical implementation of zero-emission drives and the crucial loading and refueling infrastructure required for them.
The funding program aims to support the deployment of clean and zero-emission propulsion and energy systems within inland waterway transport. Concurrently, a key goal is to shift more freight and passenger traffic onto the waterways. The initial call for applications exclusively covers measures under the “Development of Green Inland Shipping Corridors” funding line. Eligibility for the program is open to companies, municipalities, and other economically active parties based in Germany.
