Germany & Norway Forge Closer Strategic Ties

Germany and Norway have announced plans to significantly expand their strategic partnership across several key areas, aiming to collaboratively address future challenges. A joint statement released Monday, coinciding with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre’s visit to the Chancellery, detailed the commitment to develop “jointly the necessary capabilities in key areas.

The broadened cooperation encompasses areas integral to regional stability and economic security, including peace and security initiatives, energy security measures and advancements in research and innovative technologies. A notable element is the planned extension of maritime cooperation, forging an integrated operational partnership in the North Atlantic and North Sea. This expansion includes enhanced protection of critical underwater infrastructure.

Furthermore, the nations intend to deepen their existing collaboration in space capabilities. To complement the maritime focus, the partnership will also be strengthened on land, with a commitment to reciprocal support within each country’s regional NATO defense plans.

Defense ministers from both nations are tasked with advancing these priorities through a new bilateral defense agreement. This agreement is envisioned as establishing a long-term framework for the German-Norwegian defense partnership, signifying a sustained commitment to shared security interests.
