The German federal government has called for the deputy military attaché of the Russian embassy in Germany to exit the country. On Thursday, the Foreign Office explained that spying is not tolerated in Germany, especially when conducted under the guise of diplomatic status. It added that the ambassador of Russia had been summoned and informed that the individual in question-who has been espionage‑engaged for Russia-would be barred from the country.
According to a Spiegel report, the decision is linked to the arrest of a suspected Russian spy on Wednesday. The deputy attaché is alleged to have been an operative for a Russian intelligence agency and to have maintained contact with the detainee for an extended period. Federal prosecutors say he provided her with information relevant to the war in Ukraine.
