The Federal Government intends to revoke the protection status of Syrians across the board. Alexander Throm, the Union parliamentary spokesperson in the Bundestag, announced that the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) in Nuremberg is planned to begin initiating the corresponding withdrawal reviews this autumn. According to Throm, the review process should initially focus on young men traveling alone who receive social assistance, as they are non-working recipients dependent on the state. He noted that individuals such as doctors or nurses who are employed retain the option to switch to a work permit.
In parallel with the revocations, a better program is necessary to encourage the voluntary return of Syrian refugees. Throm explained that improving this program would increase the incentive for people to leave voluntarily, since any such voluntary departure is less expensive than forced deportation. The budget draft for 2027 already includes provisions for increasing the funds allocated to voluntary departure. Currently, the premium offered for each adult person is set at 1,000 euros.
