The German Police Union (GdP), represented by its national chairman Jochen Kopelke, is calling for a nationwide drone defense system to be implemented across all German police forces. The current capacity to protect events and infrastructure from drone intrusions is unevenly distributed, with many regional police departments lacking the necessary funding and technological resources.
Kopelke emphasized the escalating frequency of drone sightings and suspected drone espionage, characterizing the issue as a “routine problem and mass phenomenon”. He believes that providing all police authorities with the capability to counter drone threats is now an urgent necessity.
The GdP chairman advocates for the rapid procurement of a proven and operational drone defense system accessible to all police agencies, coupled with a comprehensive training program for officers. He urges Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt to take a proactive role in securing the required technology, suggesting that existing companies could quickly fulfill orders upon request.
The call for enhanced drone defense capabilities comes amid recent incidents involving drone overflights of critical infrastructure in neighboring Denmark and Norway, raising concerns about potential Russian involvement. Similar suspicious drone sightings have also been reported within Germany, further underlining the growing need for a standardized and accessible response system to safeguard both critical infrastructure and public spaces.
