Germany Proposes Extending Industrial Power Subsidy Beyond 2028, Expanding Eligible Firms

The German federal government plans to extend the period during which the industrial electricity tariff can be applied beyond 2028 and to broaden the group of firms that would qualify for subsidies. A spokesperson from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) confirmed to Politico’s “Energy and Climate” newsletter that discussions with the European Commission are taking place.

She clarified that expanding the pool of eligible companies or extending the tariff’s duration beyond the current three‑year limit can only happen if the European Commission adopts the necessary decisions. “The talks are ongoing, and we cannot predict the outcome” she said.

When asked, a representative of the EU Commission simply noted that it is in “close and constructive contact” with the German government over the industrial electricity tariff. The Commission declined to comment on ongoing discussions with individual member states. The German ministry did not provide any details on the exact timing of the proposed extension.
