Germany Reaches New High

A significant increase in emergency alerts disseminated via Cell Broadcast has been observed this year, according to the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK). A spokesperson for the BBK informed the “Rheinische Post” that 27 alerts at the highest warning level, Level 1, have been transmitted in 2025 alone. This contrasts with the 26 alerts sent throughout the entirety of 2024 and the 13 recorded in 2023.

Overall, there have been 136 Cell Broadcast alerts issued this year through the beginning of September – a marginal decrease compared to the 148 alerts transmitted throughout 2024. Since the introduction of Cell Broadcast in February 2023, a total of 545 alerts have been dispatched.

As part of a nationwide alert day taking place this Thursday, a test is scheduled where every mobile phone user with a switched-on device is expected to receive a text message via Cell Broadcast, preceded by an audible notification.
