Germany Rejects Loans for Asylum Seekers’ Benefits

Berlin – The German federal government has expressed reservations regarding proposals to introduce asylum benefits as loans.

A spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs stated on Monday in Berlin, responding to a query from the dts news agency, that a basic subsistence level is fundamentally a component of fundamental rights and a feature of the social welfare state. “To my knowledge” the spokesperson added, “this has never previously been provided as a loan”. Consequently, the proposal would represent a “systemic break.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of the Interior referred to statements made by Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, who emphasized a focus on limiting illegal migration to Germany. This approach, the spokesperson indicated, would ultimately lead to a significant reduction in the overall costs associated with migration.
