The German government appears cautious about potential market‑level measures to reduce energy prices ahead of the European Council. It was reported on Tuesday by officials that the government is especially skeptical of a possible price cap. The EU Commission is expected to submit a “toolbox” to the Council meeting on Thursday, likely comprising possible subsidies and tax cuts; however, these measures would have to be adopted by individual member states. Despite the discussions, Berlin says it does not expect energy prices to fall sharply after this week’s Council meetings. “The issue will stay on the agenda for the longer term” officials said.
