Germany Reports Almost 8,000 Missing Refugees Across States, Survey Reveals Disparities

Nearly 8,000 asylum seekers are reported to have disappeared across Germany, according to a survey of state governments cited by the newspaper “Bild” in its Monday edition.

The data indicate that at least 7,624 registered refugees are now classified as missing. The highest counts are in Hessen, with 1,763 missing applicants, followed by Baden‑Württember : 1,641, and Brandenburg with 1,401.

“Bild” suggests that these individuals may have disappeared by traveling to other EU countries, returning to their home nations, or otherwise leaving the country without notice.

In other states, the reported numbers are:
– Rhineland‑Palatinate : 923
– Lower Saxony : 439
– Saxony‑Anhalt : 369
– North Rhine‑Westphalia : 262
– Schleswig‑Holstein : 190
– Bremen : 184
– Hamburg : 172
– Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania : 98
– Saarland : 82

The situation in Berlin, Bavaria, and Saxony remains unclear, as these authorities have not yet systematically recorded departures. In Thuringia, research estimates around 100 missing cases, but the exact number is not yet verified.
