Germany Sets January 30, 2027, for Presidential Election Amid Memorial‑Day Preparations

The next federal presidential election will take place at the end of January 2027.
On Thursday, Bundestag President Julia Klöckner (CDU) announced that the 18th Federal Assembly will convene on 30 January 2027. She informed the Council of Elders, and the Assembly will meet in the Bundestag to elect the next head of state.

This date follows the parliamentary session week that includes the Bundestag’s memorial hour for the victims of National Socialism on 27 January 2027. The expanded seating arrangement needed for the Federal Assembly can also be used for that memorial session, saving resources and expanding invitation possibilities.

According to the Basic Law and the Act on the Election of the Federal President by the Federal Assembly, the sitting president of the Bundestag determines both the place and time of the Assembly and is responsible for its preparation, execution, and aftermath. The Assembly must meet no later than 30 days before the current president’s term expires. President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier’s term ends on 18 March 2027, meaning the latest possible meeting date would have been 16 February 2027. The anticipated meeting on 14 February would have coincided with the Munich Security Conference.
