Germany Silent on Intel Billions After Factory Shutdown

The German government is adopting a cautious approach regarding the future of the ten billion euros initially earmarked for Intel’s planned factory in Magdeburg, following the company’s decision to halt the project.

According to a spokesperson for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, no funds have yet been disbursed for the initiative. Intel had previously announced a two-year postponement of their plans as early as 2024. Consequently, budget allocations for 2025 did not include provisions for the project.

Regarding the 2026 budget, the spokesperson indicated that internal government deliberations are ongoing and he declined to provide details.

While officials acknowledged that Intel’s decision was not entirely unexpected, they expressed regret concerning the project’s suspension and its impact on the region. The government maintains its commitment to Germany remaining a key location for the semiconductor industry and intends to continue expanding the nation’s semiconductor ecosystem.
