Germany Stuns Denmark Secures Thrilling Victory

Germany’s women’s national football team secured their place in the quarter-finals of the European Championship with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Denmark. The match, played in Basel’s St.-Jakob-Park, generated a record attendance of 34,165 – the highest for a women’s European Championship group stage game not involving a host nation.

The Danish team initially took the lead in the 26th minute with a goal from Amalie Vangsgaard. However, Germany responded with determination, leveling the score in the 56th minute through a penalty converted by Sjoeke Nüsken. Lea Schüller then clinched the victory for Germany with a goal in the 66th minute.

The encounter was characterized by intense physical challenges and several key decisions reviewed by Video Assistant Referee (VAR). A goal from Klara Bühl was ruled out for offside in the 18th minute. Later, a potential penalty awarded to Germany was rescinded following a VAR review.

Denmark, having suffered defeat in their previous group game against Sweden, faces increasing pressure to maintain their hopes of progression. Germany, now boasting two wins in the tournament, advances confidently to the quarter-finals, fulfilling the expectation of a challenging match as predicted by head coach Christian Wück.
