The German government intends to maintain border controls, according to Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. Speaking to Focus magazine, Dobrindt cited recent asylum figures as evidence of the effectiveness of the measures. He stated that border controls “work and will continue to be upheld.
Official statistics reveal a significant decrease in asylum applications within Germany. In July, a total of 8,293 applications were registered, representing a reduction of approximately 55% compared to July 2024 and a 65% drop compared to July 2023.
While the overall trend demonstrates a decline, the number of asylum applications did see an increase when compared to the previous month, June, rising from 6,860 to 8,293.
Current border controls within Germany are scheduled to remain in place until September 15th. To ensure their continuation, Dobrindt is obligated to formally notify the European Commission in August.
