German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has announced plans to intensify pressure on Russia during a forthcoming visit to Vienna, Austria. Speaking ahead of the trip on Thursday, Wadephul emphasized the strong ties between Germany and Austria, citing shared language, history, familial connections and friendships. He underscored a mutual commitment to a robust and unified Europe.
According to Wadephul, joint efforts are underway to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and to facilitate the implementation of further European Union sanctions.
The German Foreign Minister also highlighted a shared obligation stemming from historical responsibility: the fight against antisemitism. Wadephul noted the pervasive nature of antisemitism, both in overt acts of violence and online hostility and reiterated the need for a continued and unwavering commitment to confront hate, violence and prejudice.
During his Vienna visit, Wadephul is scheduled to meet with his Austrian counterpart and with the Israeli Foreign Minister. Addressing the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Wadephul stressed the importance of a future for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, emphasizing that this future must exist independent of Hamas. He affirmed ongoing efforts to mediate a ceasefire and reiterated the urgent need for Israel to prioritize the provision of humanitarian aid and sustenance to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, preventing widespread hunger.
