Preliminary data released Friday by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) indicates a slight downturn in Germany’s tourism sector during May 2025. Accommodation providers registered a total of 47.5 million overnight stays by domestic and international guests, a decrease of 2.6 percent compared to May 2024.
The decline is partially attributed to a shift in the timing of Pentecost holidays, which occurred primarily in June this year for several German states, whereas in 2024 they largely fell within May.
Specifically, overnight stays by German guests decreased by 3.3 percent, reaching 40.0 million. Conversely, overnight stays by international visitors saw a modest increase of 1.5 percent, totaling 7.6 million.
Looking at the cumulative figures for the first five months of 2025, accommodation establishments recorded a total of 173.0 million overnight stays. This represents a slight contraction of 0.8 percent when compared to the record-breaking performance of the same period in 2024. Overnight stays by domestic guests dipped by 0.9 percent to 144.3 million, while those by international guests saw a decrease of 0.3 percent, reaching 28.7 million, according to Destatis.
