Germany Urged to Back Gaza Ceasefire Call

Members of the German Bundestag are debating whether the nation should formally endorse a joint declaration by 28 countries calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip. Anton Hofreiter, Chairman of the Bundestag’s European Affairs Committee, has voiced his support for Germany joining the statement.

Speaking to RTL and n-tv, Hofreiter acknowledged Germany’s “particular responsibility for the security of the State of Israel” while emphasizing the urgency of the situation in Gaza. He stated that the “extent of hunger and the humanitarian disaster” unfolding requires immediate action and expressed his belief that endorsing the declaration represents a necessary course of action.

Regarding calls to halt weapons deliveries, Hofreiter cautioned against hasty decisions, highlighting the persistent pressure and recurrent attacks Israel faces, particularly citing the influence of Iran. He emphasized the complexity of the situation, asserting the need to simultaneously guarantee the safety of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, where he noted severe crimes against the Palestinian population are occurring, while also ensuring Israel’s continued security. Hofreiter characterized this balancing act as a “very difficult dilemma situation”.
