In light of recent talks on ending the war in Iran, Thomas Röwekamp, chairman of the Bundestag’s defense committee and a member of the CDU, has called for a German military presence in the Strait of Hormuz. Addressing the “Rheinische Post” in its Saturday edition, he said: “Stability in the Gulf is crucial for our security interests. Therefore we must step in ourselves, for example to protect shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz”. Röwekamp stressed that this would not be a combat deployment but a form of stewardship in the aftermath of acute hostilities.
He noted that the mission is already aligned with the EU’s “Aspides” maritime operation, which is region‑focused. “Those who want reliable stability cannot shirk this responsibility” he warned, underscoring Germany’s role in safeguarding the area.
