Germany Voices Concern Over US Democracy Amid Kimmel Show Controversy

Concerns are mounting in Germany regarding recent developments impacting media freedom in the United States. Derya Türk-Nachbaur, parliamentary group deputy spokesperson for foreign affairs of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the Bundestag, expressed worry over reports suggesting the late-night show hosted by Jimmy Kimmel may have been discontinued under pressure from US President Donald Trump.

“We are observing this with great concern” Türk-Nachbaur stated to RTL and ntv broadcasters on Friday. She emphasized the crucial role of free and independent media, particularly shows offering commentary, as a cornerstone of democratic societies. “When that is undermined or restricted, I am concerned about the state of democracy.

Beyond the Kimmel situation, Türk-Nachbaur also voiced criticism regarding proposed limitations on foreign journalists in the US. A plan to shorten the duration of work visas for international reporters from five years to just eight months has been met with reservations. “We will address this through diplomatic channels” she affirmed, noting that Foreign Minister Heiko Maas is already engaged and that discussions are ongoing with counterparts in the US Congress. “There remains room for further discussion on this matter”.
