In light of Keir Starmer’s resignation as the Prime Minister of Great Britain, the German government has emphasized the importance of continuity. Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius stated on Monday to the dts Nachrichtenagentur that they had always regarded Starmer as “a reliable and close partner in foreign policy issues, particularly concerning Ukraine.” The government indicated that it intends to wait and looks forward to collaborating with a new Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, Kornelius confirmed that on Wednesday afternoon, the heads of state and government belonging to the so-called “E5 format” would travel to Berlin. Their purpose is to prepare for the NATO summit scheduled to take place in Ankara. Kornelius added, “We assume that it can proceed as planned.” The five countries comprising the E5 group are Germany, France, Italy, Poland, and Great Britain.
When questioned whether the Chancellor would use Starmer’s departure-a resignation prompted by poor approval ratings and pressure from his own parliamentary members-as an opportunity to reflect on his own popularity, the government spokesperson responded negatively, saying, “No.”
