Ahead of a trip to Israel and the West Bank, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has cautioned against potential annexations of Palestinian territories.
Speaking to Politico, Wadephul addressed concerns surrounding statements from Israeli politicians and recent Knesset decisions regarding annexation. He emphasized that such actions are “not justified under international law” and stated that Germany holds “a clear opinion” on the matter, which he intends to convey in Jerusalem.
The minister reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to the two-state solution and its adherence to international law, reiterating opposition to illegal settlements in the West Bank. “We have always said that” he stated.
Highlighting the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, Wadephul emphasized that securing a ceasefire remains the primary objective. He also underscored the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid to Gaza, noting the devastating toll on civilian lives. “The number of victims in the Gaza Strip is too high. We need relief for the people there.
Furthermore, Wadephul stressed the importance of securing the release of the remaining Israeli hostages, noting that approximately 50 individuals remain missing, with an estimated 20 still alive. He affirmed that their freedom remains a top priority.
