Germany’s 2025 Emissions Fall Only 0.1% – Transport and Building Sectors Still Lagging

Germany’s greenhouse‑gas emissions fell by only 0.1 % in 2025, a fact announced by the federal environment ministry and the Federal Environment Agency on Saturday in Berlin. The total output of climate‑damaging gases decreased by 0.9 million tonnes, bringing the total to 648.9 million tonnes CO₂‑equivalents – a 48 % reduction since 1990.

Although the country stayed below the 2025 limit set by the Climate Protection Act (661.6 million tonnes), meeting that cap is not enough to keep pace with its climate goals. Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) warned that progress is too slow, even as demand for electric cars and heat pumps has surged. A record number of new wind‑power projects were approved this year.

The transport and building sectors continue to drive the shortfall. Transport‑sector emissions rose by 2.1 million tonnes to 146.3 million tonnes CO₂‑equivalents, while building‑sector emissions climbed 3.4 million tonnes to 103.4 million tonnes. The agency stressed that additional climate‑protection measures are essential to meet the 2030 targets and beyond.
