The leadership of the Basisversorgung und soziale Gerechtigkeit (BSW) party has ruled out a potential coalition with the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in Saxony-Anhalt following the 2026 state elections. Amira Mohamed Ali, a co-chair of BSW, stated in an interview with the Rheinische Post that a coalition with the AfD, characterized by positions advocating for increased military spending and social welfare cuts, would be incompatible with the party’s core principles and places them further apart politically.
Mohamed Ali further clarified that there is no ongoing rapprochement between BSW and the AfD, regardless of any perceptions arising from recent engagement. This statement addresses speculation fueled by a recent interview given by Anastasia Wirsing, chair of BSW’s youth wing, to the right-leaning magazine “Compact”. Mohamed Ali explained that Wirsing was approached by a “Compact” editor during a peace demonstration and the content of the interview, while acceptable, did not signify a strategic shift towards the right.
Looking forward to the upcoming state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, BSW aims to establish a distinct political profile and provide a voice for citizens who feel underserved by existing parliamentary representation. According to Mohamed Ali, the focus remains on securing this representation rather than pre-election coalition negotiations.
