A leading figure from the Green Party, Omid Nouripour, has urged the ruling coalition parties – CDU, CSU and SPD – to swiftly resolve the uncertainty surrounding the selection process for the Federal Constitutional Court.
Speaking to the “Frankfurter Rundschau” the former party leader and current Bundestag Vice-President expressed urgency, stating that “it is urgently needed to resolve this uncertainty quickly.
The black-red coalition government previously removed the appointments of three judges for the Karlsruhe-based court from the parliamentary agenda shortly before the summer recess. This decision followed reservations voiced within the CDU/CSU parliamentary group regarding Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, a judge proposed by the SPD.
Nouripour cautioned against the susceptibility of the largest parliamentary group to misinformation circulated by certain media outlets, highlighting a concerning impact on democratic discourse. He strongly warned the CDU against forming alliances with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in states like Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where elections are scheduled for next year. He noted a recurring narrative within certain CDU regional branches, which he described as a “fairy tale of disenchantment” that has never proven to be true.
“I hope the CDU realizes in time that the AfD’s primary goal is to undermine democratic parties, particularly the Christian Democratic Union itself” Nouripour added. He concluded by warning, “Attempting to harness a far-right movement will ultimately lead to being consumed by it. If the CDU is not careful, it will follow this path faster than it realizes”.
