Germany’s Economy Minister Calls for a “Fitness Cure” and Sweeping Structural Reforms to Revitalize the Economy

Economy Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) called for a “fitness regimen” and a renewed fighting spirit after the spring projections from the economic institutes. “Germany must want to win again” she told the news channel Welt.
She added that it is crucial to finally tackle the long‑planned reforms that extend beyond the coalition agreement. Both the Chancellor and the Finance Minister have submitted proposals. Reiche stressed the need to make the country fit again, warning that social security systems must not add further costs or burden the workforce. She urged a more flexible labor law, an overall increase in working life expectancy, and a stronger focus on research and innovation.

Reiche also mentioned her own suggestions on how to curb high energy costs. “It’s a large reform package that we need to undertake” she said. “Germany must want to win again, and that requires a fitness regime-something we can achieve only through comprehensive structural reforms that we plan to implement by summer”.
