Germany’s Egg Supply Tightens for Easter, Yet Poultry Industry Speaks of No Crisis Ahead.

The Central Association of German Poultry Farmers (ZDG) says that egg supply is tight but does not see the Easter market at risk.
“Supply at the market is currently scarce” said ZDG President Hans‑Peter Goldnick to the “Rheinische Post” (Friday edition). “About 70 million eggs reach the market each day. We are not in an egg crisis, and we will have plenty of eggs for Easter”.

The shortage stems from several factors. Europe‑wide animal outbreaks, such as avian influenza, have led to fewer laying hens and a reduced number of eggs across the continent. However, Goldnick identified the primary cause as the growing popularity of eggs.

“The per‑capita consumption in Germany has risen from 236 to 255 eggs over the past two years” he explained. “The trend is still upward”.
