Germany’s Federal‑State Pact Unveils New Hospital Reform to Elevate Care and Protect Rural Services

On Thursday, the federal government and the states reached an agreement on reforms to Germany’s hospital system, Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) confirmed.

“We can now enact the hospital reform on the ground thanks to the agreement we reached on the adjustments” Warken told the “Rheinische Post” (Friday edition). “It proved worthwhile to involve the states closely in the deliberations over the past days and weeks”.

The compromise, which enjoys the required majority support of the coalition parties, “initiates the essential transformation of our hospital landscape” the minister explained. “The core objectives remain unchanged: we want greater specialization, the consolidation of capacities, and consequently an improvement in treatment quality”.

On the other hand, the public expects guaranteed basic and emergency care even in rural regions. “We have now laid the groundwork for that through the outcome-oriented consensus of all parties involved” Warken added.
