Germany’s Finance Minister Announces Crisis‑Tool for 2027 Winter Gas Supply

German Economy Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) said her government will secure gas supplies against extraordinary crises. “We want to introduce a crisis instrument for the winter of 2027” she told the “Handelsblatt”.

When asked whether a strategic gas reserve modeled on Austria’s would be the best option, Reiche explained that market activity should not be mixed with crises that could arise from sabotage or other exceptional events. “Unfortunately, some voices are willing to accept the mixing of the two cases” she warned.

Reiche added that sufficient storage capacity has already been booked for the coming winter and that supply will be protected through multiple delivery routes.
