Germany’s Greens Condemn U.S. Strikes, Demand De-escalation

Germany’s Green Party has sharply condemned recent U.S. military actions against Caracas, urging the German government to publicly pressure the Trump administration to de-escalate tensions and adhere to international law. Katharina Dröge, parliamentary group leader for the Greens, characterized the airstrikes on Venezuela’s capital as a “violation of international law” and a “dangerous military escalation” in a statement released Saturday through the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland network. She explicitly called on the German government to denounce the actions and advocate for a return to de-escalation, respect for state sovereignty and adherence to international legal frameworks.

While acknowledging the authoritarian nature of Nicolás Maduro’s regime, which has maintained power through alleged electoral manipulation, severe human rights abuses and repressive tactics against opposition figures, Dröge stopped short of offering unconditional support for a change in government. She reiterated that Maduro’s policies – including arbitrary arrests and the suppression of dissent – are “in no way acceptable.

However, the Greens’ criticism extended beyond Maduro’s actions, focusing intensely on U.S. foreign policy under the Trump administration. Dröge accused the U.S. of increasingly prioritizing a “might makes right” approach on the international stage, demonstrating a disregard for the principles of international law. She warned of a potential domino effect, asserting that other nations might emulate this behavior, ultimately rendering the world “more dangerous and unpredictable.

Dröge specifically criticized the German government’s prior silence on escalating U.S. actions in recent months, arguing that the EU and Germany have a responsibility to “clearly name and criticize” the U.S.’s unilateralist approach. She suggested that Germany’s hesitancy to challenge Washington’s policies has been a detrimental oversight, fostering a climate of impunity and potentially emboldening further violations of international norms. The Green Party’s statement signals a growing discontent within Germany regarding the government’s handling of the Venezuelan crisis and a renewed push for a more assertive and vocal stance on international affairs.
