Germany’s Greens Criticize Merkel’s Spending Approach

The Green Party’s top candidate for the upcoming state election in Baden-Württemberg, Cem Özdemir, has voiced concerns regarding the outcomes of a recent closed-door meeting of the governing coalition cabinet.

Özdemir expressed skepticism about the focus of the discussions, stating that simply debating economic competitiveness and presenting a modernization agenda is insufficient. He emphasized the need for substantial reforms to social security systems, arguing that current actions appear to prioritize providing financial support while deferring fundamental structural challenges.

Highlighting past criticisms leveled by prominent figures within the conservative bloc concerning sound fiscal management, Özdemir noted the current use of a special fund as a means of shifting budgetary responsibilities. He cautioned that this practice risks obscuring the genuine impact and additionality of federal investments.

The former federal minister underscored that the planned borrowing of 850 billion euros by 2029 is justifiable only if accompanied by a significant reform agenda that prioritizes future-oriented investment. He asserted that support from the Green Party and the Federal Council for plans concerning the infrastructure special fund was contingent upon this commitment.
