Katharina Dröge, chairwoman of the Greens’ parliamentary group in the Bundestag, has called for a nationwide speed limit in Germany. “A speed limit would be correct – it’s something that Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche should enact right now” she said to RTL and ntv, adding that it would reduce traffic accidents and benefit climate protection.
At the same time, looking ahead to the looming energy crisis and gasoline shortages in the country, Dröge highlighted a further advantage. She said the speed limit would have a “three‑fold positive effect”. “The International Energy Agency warns that we could be heading toward one of the worst energy crises in decades” she noted. According to Dröge, a speed limit would help curb consumption. “A speed limit would be a very pragmatic measure” she concluded.
