Germany’s Green party is escalating calls for Berlin to significantly increase pressure on Iran’s ruling regime, citing the ongoing and increasingly volatile protests sweeping the nation. Sara Nanni, the Greens’ parliamentary group’s expert on security and defense, sharply criticized the current German government’s response, arguing that symbolic gestures alone are insufficient to support those demonstrating in Tehran and other cities.
“Expressions of concern offer little tangible support to the people on the streets of Tehran” Nanni stated in an interview with the “Rheinische Post”. She insisted that Germany possesses levers that remain largely untapped and must actively utilize them to amplify international pressure.
Specific proposals put forward by Nanni include pledges for expedited entry into Germany for vulnerable members of Iranian civil society, along with an immediate halt to deportations to Iran. The politician also highlighted the outstanding decision regarding the listing of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the European Union’s terror list, a measure repeatedly demanded by opposition parties, particularly the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Her assessment suggests a reluctance within the German government to take decisive action on this front.
Nanni’s critique targeted what she described as a passive and inadequate approach by the German government to date. “So far, we’ve heard only a few hesitant statements” she remarked. She warned that the government risks undermining its credibility regarding Iran policy if it fails to adopt a more robust and proactive stance. This underscores a growing tension within German politics regarding how to respond to the escalating crisis and the potential implications for human rights and regional stability.
