Germany’s Greens Warn Against Softening Stance on Far-Right Party

The Green Party’s parliamentary group leader, Irene Mihalic, has launched a sharp rebuke aimed at internal factions within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) who are reportedly considering a softening or abandonment of the established “firewall” against the Alternative for Germany (AfD). Addressing the CDU ahead of a crucial leadership meeting this weekend, Mihalic cautioned against any deviation from the firm stance against the far-right party, emphasizing the precarious geopolitical landscape.

Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Mihalic expressed deep concern that normalizing relations with the AfD, particularly at a time of heightened security threats, would be a profoundly damaging decision. She specifically cited the party’s alleged propagation of Kremlin propaganda and disinformation within the German parliament as an unacceptable basis for engagement.

Adding a layer of urgency to the situation, Mihalic referenced a recent warning from German intelligence agencies. These warnings, she stated, highlighted the significant danger posed not only by Russia itself, but also by extremist groups and parties domestically that are actively promoting Russian objectives and attempting to destabilize Germany.

“The AfD’s stance is fundamentally at odds with our constitution” Mihalic asserted, arguing that any collaboration between democratic parties and the AfD is inherently untenable and carries significant risks to Germany’s democratic foundations. The commentary signals a sharp escalation in the political rhetoric surrounding the AfD, spotlighting the growing internal pressure within the CDU and the increasing scrutiny of its potential policy shifts.
