Josef Hecken, chairman of the Joint Federal Committee (G‑BA), supports eliminating the free family insurance coverage for spouses. In an interview with Politico, he said he would welcome a debate on whether it is sensible for a spouse to remain covered without paying any contribution. He believes it is reasonable that a non‑working spouse should at least pay the minimum contribution, but he would never allow free coverage for children.
The employer association BDA has proposed that spouses in private family insurance pay a contribution-at least 220 € per month for those without or with only modest income. Health Minister Warken intends to wait for the statutory health insurance finance commission’s proposals, due at the end of the month, before she comments.
