Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany has engaged in telephone conversations with the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud and the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, according to a statement released Friday by government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius.
The discussions centered on the evolving situation in the Middle East. Chancellor Merz reiterated his commitment to achieving a lasting ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and securing the release of all hostages held by Hamas, including German nationals. He suggested that the aftermath of the recent conflict between Israel and Iran presents a potentially opportune moment for progress toward these goals. He expressed gratitude to the Emir of Qatar for his valuable mediation efforts.
Addressing the urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza, Chancellor Merz emphasized the critical necessity of delivering aid to the affected population. He insisted that such assistance must be provided in a manner that is both safe and respectful of human dignity.
Merz unequivocally condemned the recent Iranian military strikes targeting Israel, Qatar and other nations. Expressing solidarity with Israel and the Gulf states, he underscored concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear program and reiterated the need for a negotiated resolution to the issue.
The German Chancellor deemed Iran’s decision to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) as unacceptable. According to Mr. Kornelius, Germany, France and Great Britain intend to coordinate their response closely, in consultation with the United States and regional partners.
