The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) has strongly condemned the recent decision by the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to pursue a potential ban on the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
Alliance leader Sahra Wagenknecht characterized the SPD’s move as “embarrassing and damaging to democracy” in a statement to the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. She argued that the SPD’s strategy, particularly given its declining electoral performance, demonstrates a resort to exclusionary measures that signals a “worrying tendency toward authoritarianism within the so-called democratic center.
Wagenknecht suggested that the SPD’s actions are likely to have the opposite effect of what is intended, potentially pushing voters further towards the AfD. She dismissed the assertion, reportedly made by SPD leader Lars Klingbeil, that it is the SPD’s historical duty to remove the AfD from parliament through legal means.
In her critique of the SPD, Wagenknecht further stated that a focus on improved policy solutions would be a more constructive approach than repeatedly breaking electoral promises, citing examples such as the previously proposed 15-euro minimum wage and reductions in electricity taxes for ordinary citizens. She emphasized the responsibility of elected officials to actively address public dissatisfaction and societal divisions through effective governance.
