Germany’s Military to Boost Space Industry with New Partnerships

The German Federal Armed Forces are poised to significantly increase the involvement of emerging “Newspace” companies in the development of planned satellite constellations, ground stations and launch initiatives. Generalmajor Michael Traut, Chief of the Bundeswehr’s Space Command, emphasized the strategic importance of bolstering a self-sustaining space industry within Germany and Europe.

Previously, institutional clients in Europe have tended to award space contracts to established providers, often with highly detailed technical specifications. This approach is now being reconsidered. Generalmajor Traut articulated a shift towards a customer-centric model, arguing that state-led procurement can accelerate technological development and drive innovation within the private sector.

The Bundeswehr has already initiated contracts with German micro-launcher enterprises, including Isar Aerospace, Rocket Factory Augsburg and Hyimpulse. Generalmajor Traut anticipates that at least two of these three companies will successfully reach orbit within the next two years.

Recent announcements indicate a substantial investment in German space projects, with Defense Minister Boris Pistorius outlining a commitment of 35 billion euros through 2030. The newly established Space Command, founded in 2021, is playing a crucial role in shaping this strategic direction. The German space sector includes over one hundred Newspace companies alongside established players, presenting a rich landscape for collaborative growth and innovation.
