Facing rising food prices, the Social Association Germany (SoVD) has called on the federal government to quickly lower the value‑added tax.
Board chairman Michaela Engelmeier told the Rheinische Post’s Saturday edition that “a reliable and healthy diet must be affordable for all and should not depend on one’s wallet”. She stresses that clear policy steps are now needed to provide real relief to consumers.
Engelmeier highlighted that one measure is to specifically lower the price of staple foods-for instance, by cutting VAT. “The key is that this support actually reaches people” she said.
