Borussia Mönchengladbach have announced the signing of Japanese forward Shuto Machino from Holstein Kiel, securing his services until June 30, 2029. The Bundesliga club confirmed the transfer on Saturday, bringing the 25-year-old player to their squad.
“Shuto is a versatile attacker who can be deployed in various positions, giving us many options in the offensive department” stated Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Sporting Director, Roland Virkus. “He proved last season that he is capable of scoring double-digit goals in the Bundesliga and we are very happy that he has chosen Borussia.
Machino, a Japanese national team player, demonstrated his scoring ability with Holstein Kiel, netting 11 goals in 32 Bundesliga appearances. “I really wanted to come to Borussia and I am delighted that the transfer has worked out” Machino commented. “Now I want to do everything I can to help the team as quickly as possible.
Prior to his move to Europe in the summer of 2023, Machino spent five years playing in his native Japan, amassing 159 appearances and 46 goals across various competitions. At Holstein Kiel, he quickly became a key player, contributing five goals and six assists in 31 second-division matches and playing a pivotal role in their historic promotion to the Bundesliga.
His impact continued into the top flight, where he scored 11 goals and provided three assists in the recently concluded season, including scoring a double against his new employers in a 4-3 victory.
Machino has represented Japan’s national team on eight occasions, scoring four goals. He made his debut on July 19, 2022, with a brace against Hong Kong and was part of the squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, although he did not feature in any matches.
