Government Cozying Up to Far-Right Party

The German federal government maintains standard communication channels with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) parliamentary group, mirroring the interactions customary with other opposition factions, according to a government spokesperson.

Speaking to the dts Nachrichtenagentur in Berlin on Friday, government spokesman Stefan Kornelius confirmed the presence of normal parliamentary inquiries and established communication pathways between the government and the largest opposition party. This aligns with the established protocols within the German parliamentary system.

Regarding a specific practice – the prior distribution of the Chancellor’s policy statement text to the largest opposition group during budget week – it remains unclear whether this will continue under the leadership of Friedrich Merz (CDU). Kornelius stated that this particular procedure has “not yet been clarified”.
