Government Gridlock: Minister Dispute Powers & Miss Deadline

Government ministries have missed a deadline set by the Chancellor regarding the allocation of responsibilities amongst them. Administrative agreements, crucial for clarifying departmental roles and resources, remain outstanding between several key ministries.

According to reports from multiple sources cited by “Der Spiegel”, agreements are still pending between the Finance and Digital ministries, the Environment and Economy ministries, the Environment and Construction ministries and the Economy and Research ministries.

These agreements, outlining specific details concerning directorates, competencies, positions and funding, were initially scheduled to be finalized and communicated to the Chancellery by August 1st. This requirement was stipulated in a Chancellery decree issued on May 6th.

Despite repeated requests, the Environment, Economy, Research and Education ministries have not provided a precise timeline for the ongoing negotiations. A new deadline is reportedly in place, extending the timeframe to October 1st.

The Digital ministry, in response to a written inquiry from Green party politician Rebecca Lenhard, indicated that a final agreement with the Finance ministry is not expected until the fourth quarter of the year.
