Britta Haßelmann, the head of the Green parliamentary group, called for the Left Party to take decisive action against antisemitism. Speaking to RTL and ntv regarding a potential coalition involving the Reds, Greens, and Left in Berlin, Haßelmann argued that the party must clarify its stance on several issues: the right to existence of Israel, how it combats antisemitism, and how it deals with antisemitic statements and viewpoints within its own ranks.
Specifically, Haßelmann criticized the way the Left Party handled its Bundestag representative, Ferat Koçak. The Green politician stated that she does not understand why someone like Koçak, a member of the Left parliamentary group, is not excluded from the faction, especially given possible links to organized crime networks. In her view, merely preventing Koçak from serving on the internal affairs committee is not sufficient-she views it as lacking real consequence. Instead, she expects clear positioning, a firm stance, and decisive action from the Left’s leadership.
When asked what the Left specifically needed to do to be credible as a coalition partner to the Greens, Haßelmann said that simply declaring a clear position is not enough. She emphasized that if incidents like these occur-if there are potential connections or if there are antisemitic currents within the party-then clarity must also include concrete measures, such as exclusion from the faction or from the party itself.
