Green Lawmaker Demands Joint Review for AfD Ban After Extremist Designation

Following the Federal Constitutional Protection’s decision to elevate the AfD state association in Lower Saxony to a “watch‑object of significant importance” because of right‑wing extremism, German Green parliamentary manager Irene Mihalic is calling on both federal and state authorities to jointly review the possibility of banning the party. In an interview with the “Rheinische Post” (Wednesday edition) she noted that the designation “clearly shows that extremist ambitions are not confined to isolated regions” and that “even West German state branches pursue an agenda that is incompatible with the core values of our constitution”. Mihalic added that she continues to push for a joint federal‑state working group that would compile and assess material from both federal and state security services with the aim of exploring a prohibition procedure. “The AfD openly pursues a racist, extremist agenda; we can no longer stand by and do nothing” she said.
