Facing disagreements within the governing coalition-specifically between the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Reiche (CDU), and the Federal Minister of Finance, Klingbeil (SPD)-Franziska Brantner, the leader of the Green Party, has accused the government of irresponsibility. Speaking to ARD’s “Bericht aus Berlin” on Sunday, she stated that Chancellor Merz (CDU) and Vice Chancellor Klingbeil are accountable, arguing that both are “unwilling to lead”. Brantner called the situation “catastrophic” for the country, emphasizing, “Ultimately, it always depends on leadership. And that falls to the Chancellor and the Vice Chancellor”. In this challenging period, the Green Party leader urged the government to implement necessary reforms and provide relief for citizens. She questioned how major reform projects could succeed when the federal government cannot even agree on relief measures to counteract high gasoline and energy prices. Commenting on the lack of progress, she noted, “We have been waiting for a year now, and nothing has happened except for disagreements; that is irresponsible”. To lessen the burden on consumers, Brantner called for a reduction in the electricity tax and an exceptional windfall tax, arguing that this would “hold companies accountable”. She also suggested that direct payout mechanisms for citizens who require funds are a viable option.
