Green Parties Warn Against Child and Youth Aid Cuts, Calling Them a “Cut Program” for Vulnerable Groups

Misbah Khan, the deputy parliamentary leader of the Green Party, has issued a warning regarding the upcoming conference of state prime ministers, specifically opposing potential cuts to childcare and youth support services. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Khan argued that what the federal government is presenting as a more efficient use of resources is, in reality, a cutting program that will harm single parents, families, children, teenagers, and people with disabilities.

She strongly criticized the plan, noting that essential savings appear to be focused precisely on those who are most reliant on support. Furthermore, she stressed that existing social structures are already overloaded in many areas. Khan asserted that decades of underfunding cannot be corrected by imposing service reductions; instead, weakening social infrastructure will only intensify existing problems.

Khan offered an alternative path, stating that the necessary steps are not cuts, but genuine structural reforms-including reducing bureaucracy, establishing clear responsibilities, strengthening inclusive schools, ensuring capable child and youth services, and providing reliable support to local communities.

This issue of providing relief to municipalities in the social sphere is also scheduled to be addressed at the Prime Ministers’ Conference in Berlin on Thursday. The federal government is reportedly seeking to achieve savings through reforms to both the Youth Welfare Act and integration assistance programs.
